I took a few notes while listening to a group's leader address members of the group today. If you associate with a group of any kind, consider whether these principles may be consistent with your experience.
- Everyone is assigned the task of spreading the word.
- The individuals within the larger group have access to people that the leaders may not be able to reach, so its important that the leaders rely on the group to get the message out broadly.
- Members should invite others to group events.
- When joining, individual members take on a share of the responsibility and mission of the leaders to help others embrace the group's cause.
- Group members should point out the misperceptions or errors of those outside the group and show them the correct way.
- It is important that group members, as messengers on behalf of the group, be careful not to misrepresent the group.
- It is not a group member's responsibility to actually "convert" outsiders; just share the message and try to answer all questions and concerns. Simply be an instrument or tool in the hands of the message.
- The lives of group members must match their message to avoid contradicting the group's efforts.
- Argument and debate are not always the most helpful path, sometimes your example can be an effective communication of the message.
- Disagreement and disunity within the group can hurt the mission.
