I attended the Liberty Bowl yesterday in Memphis. My Arkansas Razorbacks faced the Pirates of East Carolina University. I've attended quite a few college football games in my life, but this was my first experience with a postseason bowl game. I enjoyed the experience overall, but two important elements were not all that pleasant.
1. Weather. The timing of the game coincided with sunset and there was a gentle breeze with a few very mild gusts of wind. There was no precipitation and the sunset was beautiful. BUT...the temperature was below freezing. The feel of the air was the sort that normally prompts rational people to cease outside activity and seek a place of warmth. But we (me and over 62,000 other people) were not in a thinking mood. We were there to see our beloved teams compete. We were there for the...
2. Game. I really don't know if the ECU Pirates are ordinarily decent at playing football, but I know that they do not have a well-known tradition of excellence and I know that they didn't play all that well during this particular game. When the opponents of my Hogs are not all that great, it usually doesn't bother me. But when they are not playing well AND my Hogs are playing even worse than them, it makes me use words I wouldn't use in front of my Momma or my children.
But the Razorbacks won (very very very little thanks to their own performance) after the Pirates' place-kicker missed three clutch field-goals (two of which would have definitely won the game for them, while the third would have at least kept the game alive for them).
With the Hogs, I just have to be happy with the "W," regardless of how we got it. Meanwhile, I had a good time. And my toes thawed out within about 20 minutes of being back in the vehicle after the game.
