It never occurred to me to keep track of how many times I have been asked the question, "are you a golfer?" or "do you golf?", but if I had kept track, I think I could astonish you with the stat. My ready answer is "I enjoy golfing, but I don't play often and no one who knows anything about golf would refer to me as a 'golfer,' I'm pretty bad at it."
Oddly enough, this is the case with a lot of things for me, particularly sports. Take any of the following: soccer, football, tennis, basketball, baseball, billiards, fishing, etc. I could honestly just rework my pat answer above to cover any of these things and more. Throw in guitar playing and piano playing, etc. (Now, I would never ever refer to myself as "bad" at playing tuba. While I've met some folks who were considerably better than me, I still call myself good at that.)
I have no idea why I haven't managed yet to "excel" at more of the various things I've enjoyed in my short life so far, but anyhoo, I thought I'd throw out an interesting personal factoid for you today.
