Prepared to Surrender

"He who defends his own opinion, although it be erroneous and perverse, if he acts without obstinacy, especially when this opinion is not the fruit of his bold presumption but rather what has been inherited from his parents [or other teachers], who were seduced and carried away by error, if he scrupulously searches for the truth, prepared to surrender to it when it becomes known to him, ought not to be ranked among the heretics." - Saint Augustine

Prepared to surrender. Isn't this the heart of "Reformed and always reforming"? It seems so basic, yet so difficult in reality, but all maturing Christians should amen this brother in Christ.

We are all so fond of bickering over who is a "true" Christian. But shouldn't we all be prepared to make this sort of commitment:

I will not be obstinate and presumptuous in defense of an erroneous and perverse opinion. I will joyfully, immediately surrender to the truth when it becomes known to me.

If we fail at such a basic level of love for God, we should be prepared (according to Augustine) to rank with the heretics.
