From the "Did You Know?" Department

I'm considering a new type of occasional entry here. Once in a while, I come across something which is interesting but does not necessarily motivate me to recommend it or criticize it. As the nature of blogging tends to lead readers to believe that anything not criticized is recommended, I feel it necessary to distinguish this type of post as "informational" or "FYI" as some are fond of abbreviating. For instance, I may draw your attention to the fact that Campus Crusade for Christ is on 1,029 campuses in the United States and beyond, but I would prefer that you didn't assume that I give a hearty amen to the vision and mission of that organization.

If I do make this a regular type of entry, the heading will be consistent as "From the 'Did You Know?' Department."

First up in this vein, I recently visited the website of Belhaven College in Jackson, Mississippi. Belhaven is a small Christian liberal arts college. I found these things interesting on their site:
  • "Belhaven strives for excellence in higher education. The college is dedicated to the belief that only the Christian liberal arts institution can educate men and women capable of totally purposeful action and direction. Belhaven College has a rich heritage of prominence in education dating back to 1883."
  • "The college has a covenant relationship with the Synod of Living Waters of the Presbyterian Church (USA)..."
  • The college is named after the house in which it was started by its first president, Dr. Lewis Fitzhugh.
  • The current president is a third generation college president (his father and grandfather also presided over Christian liberal arts colleges).
  • The motto of the college is "to serve, not to be served."

And from the "Last but not Least" Sub-Committee of the "Did You know?" Department:
  • Any students who use tobacco in the permitted areas of the Belhaven campus are asked to "place cigarette butts in appropriate receptacles." Also, any students who are able to lawfully obtain empty alcohol containers are not permitted to use them as decorations in campus housing.
