Matthew 6:25 “Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?”
I think this verse helps to illustrate why debt of any sort is problematic. First, among those things which are mentioned as potential distractions, we find food, drink, and clothing. Recognizing that this verse is not meant to convey an exhaustive list, still I think it is safe to imagine that one reason that monthly debt payments are not included in this list is that they are assumed to be a non-issue for the Christian, who would have taken heed to other relevant passages. Secondly, we know from the implication of servitude in other passages and sadly, by our own experience, that debt obligations provide a nearly irresistible source of the distraction that the above verse warns against.
How can a person avoid pondering what they will eat, drink, and put on for clothes, if they are by necessity pondering a significant debt payment each month? We make obedience to God difficult on this point by enslaving ourselves to lenders.
