Analogy

A Fair Proposal

Three men took a journey. Joe Searcy, John Searcy, and Jake Searcy were travelling by foot, each with a backpack on their shoulders and a suitcase in hand. Just as they began to realize the weight of their luggage, they noticed a man working in his own field seeming to live a quiet and peaceable life. The man's name was Harley White.

The Searcy men approached Mr. White and made him aware of their plan. They wanted Mr. White to join them in their journey and carry the backpacks and suitcases. In exchange for his agreement, the three men offered to provide him with the best socks in the state and to give him occasional manicures. Mr. White clearly and respectfully said, "No, I'm not interested in becoming your servant, regardless of any privileges and benefits you propose," and he turned to walk away.

Just then, it occured to the Searcy men to propose a fair way of deciding the matter. "Mr. White, we have heard your opinion and we want to be fair in handling this decision. Let's vote." So Mr. White, upon losing the vote 3 to 1, became the servant of the Searcy men. And the Searcy men appreciated Mr. White's participation in the decision-making process. And Mr. White felt that something was not right.
