Two Birds

This post should serve to reveal to you more about me and direct your attention to a couple of excellent devotional readings.

I have mentioned through this journal on several posts the name of Charles Haddon Spurgeon. The reason that you frequently see Spurgeon quotes is that I try to read his Morning and Evening devotions daily. There are 730 devotions to be read in the year and it is not often that I fail to read both on any given day. So among those influences on my life, it is fair to assess that Spurgeon's devotions are an important element.

The last two mornings have been particularly good readings. If you click on the quotes below, you'll be directed to a website containing the full texts of both devotions and I highly recommend a full reading of both. Many times I simply include a short quote or small phrase from the readings, but I think these are worth your time to read the whole thing. If you would all go out and purchase the book, it would save me some writing here. I could just get on here every day and say, "I liked this morning's Spurgeon devotion," and you would know what I was talking about.

Death to the world, and burial with Christ, are experiences which carnal minds treat with ridicule...Worldly wisdom recommends the path of compromise, and talks of "moderation."...When the town is on fire, our house cannot be too far from the flames.

Remember, therefore, it is not thy hold of Christ that saves thee—it is Christ; it is not thy joy in Christ that saves thee—it is Christ; it is not even faith in Christ, though that be the instrument—it is Christ’s blood and merits.
