May I just briefly say that honest debate on any issue presupposes respect on the part of all involved? Speaking the truth in love among brethren, in particular, requires that the truth be rightly spoken. For instance, if I am going to show you the error of your understanding, I have to know what it is that you are asserting.
Let's say you assert that roses are red, and I respond, "Roses are not green. It's obvious that there are no green roses, so clearly you are mistaken." You would rightly sense that I either paid no attention to your assertion, or that I needed to change your assertion in order to make my response sound more authoritative. Whatever my excuse for misrepresenting you, I have not shown you respect.
