Grandaddy, August 1945

My Grandaddy fought in World War II as a Top Turret Gunner on a B-29 for the 505th Bomb Group, 484th Squadron of the 313th Wing of the 20th Air Force in the Asiatic Pacific Theater of Operation. His group was mistakenly associated with the atomic bomb drops because the Enola Gay and crew were based at the same location as his group and were thought to be a "normal" B-29 group like his. According to Grandaddy, no one in the 505th knew the members of the Enola Gay crew or the particulars of their mission until it was complete. He was not aware of any interaction at all between that crew and the rest of the soldiers on that base; he said they were very separate from the ordinary operations of the base.

On several occasions, his flight pattern took him near enough Hiroshima to see the aftermath, which he called "absolute devastation."

Grandaddy (who was not yet even a Daddy) was 29 years old at the time. He'll be 90 in January. He loves the Lord and is very special to me.
