Driving Lesson

If I had a child that was ready to learn this sort of math, today would have been a good opportunity for a real life application. Here's the conversation we could have had on my way to work:

Me: If your average speed is five miles per hour, how long does it take to travel three miles?
Child: A really, really long time.
Me: That's right, and I've proven that this morning. To be exact, it has been 36 minutes because we've averaged one mile every 12 minutes. Now, why are we only averaging five miles per hour?
Child: Stupid drivers?
Me: Well, that's right, but Daddy's working on not saying that so much. How can we be more gracious?
Child: Incompetent drivers?
Me: Yes, that's still accurate, but let's try again.
Child: While God, in great mercy, has probably bestowed many gifts upon the drivers in front of us, he has withheld intelligence.
Me: Very good, very good.
