Some comments/ponderings regarding the seasonal blogging about the upcoming election, particularly with regard to current President Bush and the Constitution Party Candidate Michael Peroutka:
Why is it that some Christians who are Bush apologists feel free to nit-pick Peroutka's character because he makes his commitment to Christ a central issue, while effectively giving Bush a pass on character by simply admitting that he is "flawed?"
Why is it that some Christians who are Peroutka apologists feel comfortable asserting that no true Christian could vote for Bush, as if Peroutka is some sort of perfect man?
Why do some bloggers feel that the standard by which the quality of a candidate is measured is based on his own platform? Some say that the faithfulness of Bush and Peroutka shouldn't be measured in similar fashion because Bush doesn't have the sort of faith-based platform that Peroutka has.
My point here is simply to challenge you, the reader and possibly fellow blogger, to evaluate your options consistently. If you think a big mistake in Peroutka's life is cause to refrain from voting for him, also consider whether more recent mistakes may prevent you from voting for Bush or Kerry. If you think Peroutka's policies may be harmful to America, consider whether harmful policies may be advanced by Bush or Kerry. If you think Peroutka's supporters harm his credibility, consider whether supporters of the major parties should tarnish their candidates' credibility.
No one is asking you to give Peroutka a pass because he is carrying the boldest Christian banner. All I want to see is Christians refraining from being so caught up in opposing Kerry that they fail to see inconsistencies in the way they treat Peroutka. When asking Peroutka supporters to open their eyes to his flaws, take a moment to consider whether or not your own eyes are open to Bush's "flaws."
Finally, I make a commitment, without reservation, that if it can be credibly demonstrated that Michael Peroutka's life consistently contradicts his profession of faith in Christ, I will not vote for him in November.
But I cannot view Bush as the better candidate simply because Mr. Peroutka made some mistakes ten to fifteen years ago or because his policy positions don't line up 100% with mine or because the Constitution Party platform has attracted some kooky folks.
