I am presently composing a small piece for consumption here regarding the office of elder within the Church. Meanwhile, I thought it appropriate to direct your attention to an online copy of a good book. Richard Baxter's "The Reformed Pastor" is available at the Center for Reformed Theology and Apologetics (Reformed.org) and is well worth checking out. It is a rather long work and one you are more likely to access as a reference instead of sitting down to read it "cover to cover."
"Of the excellence of this work, it is scarcely possible to speak in too high terms." - William Brown in the Preface
While the primary audience for the book is pastors and aspirants to the ministry, I think there is an extremely valuable element for the laity within the Church. The Scriptures instruct us to highly esteem our elders, and understanding their office should give us a great stride toward the esteem which they are due.
"...if the ministers be not reverenced by the people, they will rather slight them, and contest with them, than humbly learn and submit to them..." - Baxter in the Dedication
