Religious Sport

Thank you to Alastair at 40 Bicycles for an interesting link to a BBC article. The somewhat tongue-in-cheek, though sadly reeking of honesty, claim of the article is that football has successfully supplanted Christianity as a religion in Britain.

...football is a religion. It doesn't just look like worship, it has taken over almost all the patterns of British life and behaviour that used to belong to Christianity.

My immediate thought was that it would be better if more people would openly acknowledge idolatrous perspectives toward such things as sport. It seems that the unbelieving population in Britain is much more ready to 'call it like it is,' while unbelieving Americans want to maintain a facade.
