I have been privileged to interact with some Godly brothers on this topic via email after posting these recent entries. As I mention in the Comments section on one of the posts below, a primary theme is our need to approach all areas, but particularly financial stewardship, from a Biblical, covenantal understanding. That is, we need to think not only in terms of the Bible's warnings against debt, but also in terms of the covenantal life that the Scriptures put forth as the reason we shouldn't need to be in a servant position to any man over financial burdens.
Let us remember, as we endeavor to serve God faithfully, that we don't read a Biblical principle against a particular practice, and then look around in a pragmatic way for our alternative. The Word of God is sufficient to instruct in how to then live as we cast off wrong, cultural assumptions and practices.
